What makes a good listener? - Music Critic, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim

Kentaro Ogasawara July 27, 2024

Music critic Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, In her latest newsletter, mentioned,

"Good listening, then, attends to the multi-layered nature of communication with a multi-stranded beam of attention. You might almost say: good listening is polyphonic."

It’s easy to despair at the decline of listening in our time. Between digital overstimulation, political polarization and our relentless drive for personal optimization it can seem as if the odds are against us.

Which is where music comes in. Especially performances of complex, instrumental, long-form music are an opportunity to train the ear on a web of connected yet distinct lines. And in the absence of words, the part of the mind that wants to jump ahead and formulate a response – and which is so often the reason we stop listening to – grows quiet. When we surrender fully to a musical experience, whether in the concert hall or on the sofa, we get to build both the cognitive patience and the multi-stranded focus that make us better listeners in life.

It all starts with intent and awareness. But once you recognize that a big chunk of human communication is expressed without words, listening to music becomes much more than entertainment. It can serve as the training gym for one of our most vital and underused muscles.
