Met’s Don Giovanni, or Yourself

Kentaro Ogasawara September 9, 2025

The Power and Redemption / Don Giovanni – The Rake Punished by Mozart and Da Ponte.

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Ivo van Hove’s 2023 production of Don Giovanni for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera this fall. This is simple yet exquisitely refined. The combination of direction, conducting, and singing at the highest level reveals the opera’s timeless form, elegant yet profound. The story opens and closes with major events, while the middle depicts a loop of repeated misdeeds by the characters; it is the staging and conducting that determine whether the tension is sustained. Director Ivo van Hove focuses on the opera’s original subtitle, The Rake Punished and exposes the power structures through which Don Giovanni builds his freedom at the expense of others. Against his domination, servants, peasants, and women resist, turning the opera into a mirror of contemporary society. In the end, Giovanni is dragged to hell, and the other characters find redemption as they begin anew. Mozart’s score is meticulous, filled with sudden shifts of color and relentless dynamics, demanding constant tension. When precise tempo and breath support align perfectly, the music functions like a clock. Singing requires flawless legato and breath control to sustain long phrases, as well as the technique to master dazzling coloratura and dramatic expression. For example, the role of Zerlina demands both delicacy and humanity.

Ivo van Hove (born 1958 in Antwerp, Belgium) designs his productions with music itself at the center, treating visual elements as a support for the musical experience. On his stage, the voices and orchestral sound are fully highlighted, creating a fusion of theater that emphasizes the essence of the music. He minimizes sets and props to enhance the singers’ voices and the orchestra, delivering a striking auditory and visual experience to the audience. By reducing physical gestures, the staging allows complete focus on the music, conveying subtle nuances of tone, rhythm, and dynamics. In addition, he synchronizes projections and lighting with the music’s tempo and dynamics, visualizing the emotional expression of the score. When the orchestra swells, the stage lighting and projections change to amplify the musical experience. Van Hove also reinterprets classical operas in a contemporary context, revealing new aspects of the composer’s musical expression and giving familiar melodies and harmonies a fresh impact through dialogue with the staging.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin (born 1975 in Montreal, Canada) conducts with the Orchestre Métropolitain, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has served as Music Director of the Metropolitan Opera (Met Opera) since 2018. With energetic yet meticulous conducting, he boasts a wide repertoire from classical to contemporary music, and captivates audiences through his strong rapport with singers and orchestras, as well as his approachable personality. He always wears Louboutin.
