The presence of what was once a firehouse—

Did someone think through this color scheme,

down to the exact way the 8:00 AM light falls inside?

Glossy,

rich,

deeply comfortable.

Where did last night's noise disappear to?

From inside this place, with only two tables occupied,

All passing the eaves of Venice Beach moves west—

west, and further west,

drifting like a gentle breeze.

Spreading butter over the warm, soft pancake relaxing before me,

and coaxing out the hesitant syrup.

Just beyond that block, high above the sandy beach

of the Pacific—

looking out over the onshore wind,

cool,

the sky,

a seagull circling

without end.

Far across the ocean’s horizon,

a dreaming seagull,

the wind

diving into its wings.
