Inspired Inspiration in Brooklyn

Kentaro Ogasawara September 8, 2024

The man is blind and lives in the world of sound. Barefoot, he enjoyed musical sparks with ten musicians. I learned about him from an email the day before and went to Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. The brick building has a spacious interior and a wide garden. His spot faced the stage, where he engaged in a musical conversation with the ten musicians. His sparks could be heard through speakers alongside those of the musicians.

Their interplay of inspiration created a world like a moving lantern of memories and imagination, yet it was lively and full of everyday life. ICE’s members are an outstanding group that captures and expresses contemporary sounds, yet they feel close and connected to our daily lives. Even moments invisible in everyday life caught my heart and then disappeared, leaving a trace in me.

Many works were presented that day, but Rick’s piece was fascinating. Several musicians started speaking with a prologue, then gradually began producing sounds with their instruments.

Wet Ink 2022-23 AIRs: Rick Burkhardt

In the end, the words disappeared, leaving fragments of sound clearly present in the space, reminiscent of Kandinsky’s composition series in 2024. Other works similarly liberated the mind and body, offering a sense of the unfamiliar while evoking a sense of intimacy. They revealed how artificially ordered our world is.

Program

Fay Victor: SafeHarbor Shade for voice and bassoon

Isabel Lepanto Gleicher: Del Lago for open instrumentation

Ingrid Laubrock: Koans (selections) for voice and cello

Rick Burkhardt: Prologue for flute, percussion, violin, cello

Nicole Mitchell: Birdsongs for Equitable Togetherness for open instrumentation

(Intermission)

Earl Howard: Boson1 (2024, World Premiere) for electronic performer and ten musicians

Those who perceive the present through sound are the ones who will guide the future with it. Though seemingly distant from the ordinary world, their work is invaluable for those living today.
