I have a great fondness for both sound and the world of sumo, and I enjoy them equally. During a scene in the July tournament, I thought, ‘Huh, I’ve experienced this somewhere before…’ and then I remembered.
It was when the vertical crescendo in the third movement of Bruckner’s Seventh suddenly flashed back. The measured crescendo just before the wind instruments’ melody strikes felt like cornering an opponent at the edge and throwing them—while the timpani tremolo heightened the tension to the extreme. There’s a thrilling sensation that the match is about to be decided. The swirling, tornado-like sweep of the strings afterward was like a perfectly timed underarm throw exploiting a split-second opening. Wild energy collided with the illusion of a massive orchestra at that precise moment.

それはブルックナーの7番の３楽章の縦のクレッシェンドが突然ブラッシュバックしてきた時。管楽器のメロディーに突入する直前の刻みのクレッシェンドは、相手を際に追い詰めてうっちゃる、ティンパニのトレモロが、緊迫感をめっちゃ煽り立てる。今勝負がつくぞという迫ってくるゾクゾク感。そのあとのうねるトルネードのような弦の巻き込みは押し返す隙をついた一瞬の下手出し投げだ。野生のエネルギーが、大規模なオーケストラのイリュージョンと重なった瞬間だった。
