ekmeles: Stockhausen's Stimmung

Kentaro Ogasawara February 17, 2025

The vocal group ekmeles performed Stockhausen's Stimmung at St. Paul’s Chapel, Columbia University on February 14th. The piece is over 70 minutes long, with six vocalists layering their voices and developing words and poems in 51 sections called models. In each model, humming such as "Moo-a-moo-a-moo-a" and "Myan-myan-myan-myan" is repeated, and the six vocalists gradually explore the overtones of the sound, creating an elusive and smooth overtone fusion interspersed with whispers, whistling, and chatter, resulting in a unique sound. Then, the names of the world's gods or greetings, such as Shiva, Vishnu, Hallelujah, and Salam, are repeatedly chanted. It calms the listener's mind and gives a sense of the ever-changing vitality. In German, Stimmung has various meanings, such as "tuning" and "mood," but Stockhausen wrote this piece in 1968 in his snow-covered home on frozen Long Island Sound . He said he recreated the "magical" space he found himself in after wandering around Mexican ruins for a month. Stockhausen first discovered the technique when he heard his young son humming and making various sounds in his crib after falling asleep. It sounded like a style of singing used by women and children in churches in the Middle Ages, but it was later entirely replaced by masculine Gregorian chant.
