Concert 2024-25

Webern

Kentaro Ogasawara August 9, 2025

Balse told me about Leica.

It captures shadows, not light.

In music, it can be said to reflect silence rather than sound.

And then, an old memory came back: when we lived in the same apartment and listened to Webern's Op. 7 (1910) together.

1. Sehr langsam

2. Rasch

3. Sehr langsam

4. Bewegt

Webern was a Hungarian aristocrat with estates in Croatia. He studied under Schoenberg and turned to atonality. The order created by destroying tonality and treating sounds equally gives silence. We were in our twenties at the time and didn't understand this logic, but after we finished listening, we were empty for a while.

12 note - Atonality

Webern's work is characterized by simple sonic textures and meticulously selected timbres, so transparent that every note can be distinguished. Its meticulous composition and condensed yet clear structure, along with its systematic treatment of elements other than sound, can be seen as a precursor to total serialism.

The same can be seen in the Balse.

Art's most significant function is to open up what is expressed, allowing different people to bring different interpretations to it, leading to unexpected developments. Because art has no clear definition, it touches and draws out diverse sensibilities, becoming a breeding ground for individual sensitivities, eventually developing into a tangible, visible world of culture, industry, and services, before dying and being reborn again.

The world captured by Balse suggests that photography is one art form with no limits. This is a sign of a new world being reborn.
