Concert 2024-25

Candillari's Ear and Heart /

Kentaro Ogasawara October 30, 2024

Juilliard Orchestra, conducted by Daniela Candillari on Monday night, was filled with worm, dedicated, and fresh energy at Alice Tully Hall. The first piece was Grazina Bacewicz's Overture. She is a Polish-Lithuanian composer and violinist who has also performed Lutoslawski's Violin Concerto. It was written in 1943 in Poland under Nazi occupation, but they were so energetic and positive. The second one was Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, written in 1938 and for students. The violinist was Sophia Werner, a Juilliard student. Her tone was so fresh and rich and had an impressive dynamic scale throughout the whole time. She was a genius. The third piece was Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. It is said that this piece was completed after Stalin's death. These three pieces were written in a much more difficult time than now, but I felt Candillari's heart and ear carefully bringing out the pieces. I was especially impressed by the pain like my flesh cut. Shostakovich's performance started slowly enough, and I was utterly drawn in. How did Candillari bring out the fear from the students? The timpani also sounded unhesitant and painful. The concertmaster's solo at the end was also highly sarcastic.
