Concert 2024-25

amor fati

Kentaro Ogasawara August 5, 2025

After listening to Kreisleriana, I remembered Kurtág's "Martha Ligature," which I heard in April at Uchida's recital. Kurtág studied unity using as few materials as possible. He was also fascinated by Webern.

This piece commemorates his wife, who passed away in 2019. Kurtág said in an interview, "Martha and I were married for 73 years," and "But it feels like no time has passed. I'm just waiting for the day we can be together again." In musical terms, ligature means a tie or slur. Two chords circle each other, as if performing a slow, quiet, ecstatic dance. I will hear it again someday, somewhere.

GYÖRGY KURTÁG

“Márta ligaturája”

In dir ist Freude, BWV 615

Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106

God = Light

Angel = Messenger of Love

Ghost = Death

Joy = Dionysus = Varus

Bach = Counterpoint = duality

Kurtág György (born 19 February 1926 in Lugoj, Romania, formerly Lugos, Hungary) is a Romanian-Hungarian composer, pianist, and professor of chamber music. Influenced by Bartók, Malinstein, and Webern, he is considered Webern's successor in Expressionism.

Kurtág does not distinguish between children and adults, beginners and experts. Pieces played by beginners, such as "Perpetual Motion" from Book 1, No. 1, "Palm Flicks" from Book 2, "Flowers, People..." and "Knots" from Book 2, and "Antifone Fis" from Book 1, are almost always performed at Kurtág's recitals.

In dir ist Freude, BWV 615

Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106

神=光
