Concert 2024-25

Kreisleriana

Kentaro Ogasawara August 5, 2025

I received a photo letter from Balse.

There were a few words in it.

After reading, I looked up the schedule for next May and found that I will be listening to Schumann's Kreisleriana.

"As if drifting on an eternally choppy sea, drawn by inner fantasies and dreams, I vainly searched for a haven that would give my work the peace and quiet it required." - Kreisler

Schumann's Kreisleriana and E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr "

Schumann compared Kreisler, the Kapellmeister in Hoffmann's story, to himself and his future wife, Clara. Schumann lacked a formal musical education from a young age, a fact he struggled with throughout his entire life. He felt inferior, fearing that his work might be as comical as Murr's memoirs, due to the cat's confident, inconsistent writing, which mimics human writing. Murr also empathizes with this, as he grows through various experiences.

"The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr "(1819-21)

Murr, a kitten found by the musician Mr. Abraham, learns to read and write and begins to compile a manuscript of his life. His manuscript depicts his upbringing, his friendship with his dog friend Ponto, and his love affair with a beautiful she-cat, all told from a feline perspective and with humor. Meanwhile, mixed into Murr's manuscript was a biography of musician Johannes Kreisler. Murr had plucked a copy from his husband's library, torn it up, and used it as a writing pad and ink blotter. When the manuscript was printed, a careless printer mixed Murr's manuscript with Kreisler's biography, resulting in Mur's memoirs being interspersed with passages from Kreisler's biography.

These two stories intertwine, allowing readers to simultaneously experience Murr's outlook on life and the life of the musician Kreisler. Through this dual structure, Hoffmann explores themes such as reality and fantasy, reason and madness, and man and animal.

Because Schumann had multiple personalities—Eusebius and Florestan—this story must have stimulated his creativity.
