Labor Day long talk

Kentaro Ogasawara August 31, 2025

It is the week of Labor Day. I had a long conversation with Balse. His photo book is set to be published at the end of the year. In his biography, it says:

He continues to explore photography, poetry, and sound as modes of expression, merging artistic practice with philosophical inquiry in a continuous effort to illuminate the fragile and evolving nature of humanity.

—“A continuous effort to illuminate the fragile, ever-evolving human form.”

It is a landscape I have been observing myself in. I remembered August 4th, the day tickets for Carnegie Hall went on sale—a launch day for boarding the “time machine” that spans three venues of the world. At the head of the waiting line were the usual Russian ladies.

Balse says it is a time machine carrying the children of those who have witnessed this endeavor to reflect and illuminate. On the top balcony of Carnegie, the soft lighting captures people deeply absorbed in the music, allowing you to experience that world alongside them. Along the sides of the stage on the first and second floors, the orchestra’s power hits like splashing water in a pool, overwhelming you with a force so intense that it is almost impossible to keep your eyes open.

On the first-floor “packet” seats, the wide chairs and comfortable cushions allow you to listen in relaxed comfort. Seats slightly off-center offer an easygoing way to enjoy the world. The front center seats on the second floor provide the highest resolution, letting you perceive the work, the performance, the interpretation, the acoustics, and the communication in detail—truly the ultimate monitoring seat.

In the middle of the first floor, surrounded by Carnegie Hall’s elegant curves, you are enveloped in the warm applause of devoted audiences for veteran performers like pianist Mitsuko Uchida. It evokes the sensation of standing alone amid a forest, the trees rustling in the wind. Looking ahead, Uchida shines like an Amida Buddha, and the “continuous effort to illuminate the fragile, ever-evolving human form” is realized—through the work, the performer, the audience, and the venue, all united as one.

It is a story of how a single artist’s biography can illuminate the experience of the observer themselves.

In front of Carnegie Hall on the day tickets went on sale, a Carnegie officer gave us a red notebook and a pen.

All the box windows are open when it is released.

A few minutes ago, Usher's Chanel seemed a little nervous. Everyone else was.

Yes.

Where souls reside.
