Yohei Abe, the photo book relesed in SF

Kentaro Ogasawara December 15, 2025

Yohei Abe, a long-time friend of classicasobi and my host at Balse, has released the photobook Ghosts, Angels, Beyond Light. Four years ago, a personal event led him to decide to create this photo book. He had been taking photos all along, but with the decision to publish a photo book, he planned it, and the launch event was held at the Leica Gallery in San Francisco on 12.11.2025, called "Vision to Volume" by Leica. His decision can be said to have started from despair. I have watched the four-year process from the initial idea to the final photographs, completed through collaboration with his camera teacher and producer, Sage Backstrom. As a friend and as a fellow of classicasobi who enjoys art and seeks to apply it in the world, I am filled with congratulations. Usually, I absorb living art from music and musicians, but experiencing so closely how human life inspires his actions and ideas, resulting in a fine art photo book, is a first for me. He is an ordinary person, neither an art school graduate nor a child of artists. Yet his photo book conveys the creator's intention, which only someone who can read musical scores might understand, and a universal charm that anyone can relate to upon viewing. As the pages progress, viewers will find curiosity and questions arising. This may be very personal, or it may be a feeling that emerges when interacting with friends or family. Even a single photograph may appear differently at different times, in other situations, or under various conditions. The approximately 100-page photo book may feel like Marcel Proust's long novel In Search of Lost Time to some, while others may casually browse it like an idea book or a simple magazine. This photo book is very personal.

Yohei Abe is a genius of perception. He captures only what reacts to his senses and develops it. He is very flexible with new forms of expression, taking time to understand and convey what may seem difficult. He is very tolerant of subjects and, at times, indifferent. I can see in his photographs the hidden codes within melody, harmony, and flow that I experience in music. What he intends and what viewers perceive may differ, but he did not photograph with that intention; he pressed the shutter in response to the sensed moment.

Born in California to Japanese parents, spending his student years in Japan, and returning to America, I met him 25 years ago. His attitude and approach toward art and culture have remained the same. However, his ability to classify and perceive objects is entirely different. It is reflected in his appearance and actions, and that is directly captured in his photographs, forming a single story: Ghosts, Angels, Beyond Light.

His photographs make us reconsider elements such as line, space, and color that past innovative artists have explored. He has absorbed the meanings of these elements from philosophy, poetry, visual arts, various media arts, and all types of music, and used them to capture the world. He took time to connect each of his interests and questions to a goal and to depict them. The driving force was the love that gave him the opportunity and the curiosity that arose from within him.

Highly abstract paintings are all made to appear as they do through technique and intention, but the moments he captures are entirely live. The timing of his capture is intentional, but what is projected is accidental, and the way viewers perceive it determines its meaning. Chance, inspiration, and destruction—such intentions dormant within him can be said to have emerged from a personal event in his life.

Ghosts, Angels, Beyond Light carries that life within it and continues to breathe even now.

His mentor, producer, Sage is next to him and find his photo book first time himself too at SF Leica.

This is Leica’s publishment under “ Vison to Volume“

Yohei and 5 others publish thier own book.

Such an intimate time with enthusiasts

vison to volume.

Ghosts, Angels, Beyond Light

Ghosts, Angels, Beyond Light
