Sarah Davachi – Feedback Studies for Percussion

Canadian composer Sarah Davachi (b. 1987) is one of the leading figures in contemporary drone and minimalist music. Her 2022 work Feedback Studies for Percussion presents a meditative soundscape that explores time, resonance, and overtone phenomena through percussion and feedback. Conventional elements such as melody and rhythm are minimized, with attention focused instead on the sustain of sound, the emergence of overtones, and the way resonance unfolds within the performance space. The performer does not merely follow a score but assumes the role of a “sculptor of sound,” responding in real time to the acoustics of the venue. The piece challenges listeners to experience music not as an “event” or “structure,” but as pure presence.

The work radically slows the perception of time and draws the audience into a profound state of immersion, functioning as an ecological observation of sound itself. The listener is made acutely aware of every tone, and subtle variations and gently oscillating overtones appear almost as if the sounds are alive, constantly transforming. In this way, sound itself becomes the narrative, rather than melody or rhythm. The performer acts as a sculptor of resonance, shaping the space, while the listener’s sense of time is transformed; even moments that seem still are rich with minute, continuous change, drawing attention inward. The piece is an exploration of the boundary between silence and resonance, offering a deeply spiritual listening experience situated between contemporary composition and the contemplative stillness of religious ritual.

Davachi’s broader practice combines the modal sensibilities of early music, electronic sound techniques, and instruments such as synthesizers and organs. She composes not to propel sound forward but to allow it to exist in space. Her key works include Vergers (2016), Cantus, Descant (2020), Antiphonals (2021), and Two Sisters (2022), which have been performed at venues including MoMA, the Elbphilharmonie, and London’s Southbank Centre. In 2020, she founded her own label, Late Music, under Warp Records, further cementing her distinctive position in contemporary music.

Igor Santos - living to fall [music and rain]

Canadian composer Igor Santos premiered living to fall [music and rain] at the TIME:SPANS Festival in 2022. This innovative contemporary music work merges sound and visual media. It is the third installment of his Water Triptych, a series exploring the relationship between water and sound. Using thunder and rain as metaphors for both violence and healing, and incorporating quotations from classical and popular music, the piece transcends a mere collection of sounds to convey profound emotions and social messages.

The work is scored for piano, keyboard, two percussionists, and visual media. Performers employ techniques that mimic the sounds of thunder and rain, creating a rich, multisensory experience. By synchronizing with the visuals, the music conveys emotions and ideas that extend beyond the sum of its notes.

Santos’ approach constructs complex, mimetic cycles between sound and visuals, performers and media, and even historical musical material. Through collaboration with visual artists, the piece demonstrates new possibilities that push the boundaries of musical expression. At its premiere, the precise performance by Yarn/Wire and the seamless integration of Santos’ artistic vision received widespread acclaim.

living to fall [music and rain] weaves together music and visuals, past and present, violence and healing, offering the audience a striking example of the expressive potential of contemporary music.

Yarn/Wire is a percussion and piano quartet founded in New York in 2005. They explore contemporary music through collaborations with composers and sound artists. In the “Yarn/Wire Currents” series, they develop intersections of diverse expressions, including new commissions, technology, improvisation, and music theater. Through performances and educational activities in the U.S. and abroad, they provide richly creative musical experiences. Their notable works include Yarn/Wire Currents Vol. 9 and The Beat My Head Hit. In 2025, they are set to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a festival.

イゴール・サントス – living to fall [music and rain]

代表作には『Yarn/Wire Currents Vol. 9』や『The Beat My Head Hit』など。
