Met Opera Carnegie Hall Contemporary Classical Music Period

The Marlboro Soloists at Weill Recital Hall

Kentaro Ogasawara November 24, 2025

11.21.2025 Musicians From Marlboro at Weill Recital Hall. A chamber music group made up of young musicians associated with the Marlboro Music Festival in the United States. The festival, established in 1951, is known as a place where young and experienced musicians come together to study and perform chamber music. Selected members of the group give concerts both in the U.S. and abroad.

Performers

Donovan Bown, Oboe

Clara Neubauer, Violin

Itamar Zorman, Violin

Hiroki Kasai, Viola

Ao Peng, Viola

Oliver Herbert, Cello

Program

BRITTEN Phantasy for Oboe Quartet, Op. 2

SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No. 8

FELIX MENDELSSOHN String Quintet No. 1 in A Major, Op. 18

The Mendelssohn Quintet: 2 violins, 2 violas, and cello. Oliver's cello was excellent. His unique long notes. The way he grasped the keys—his tone. Ao Peng's viola was excellent. His ability to shape his phrases in space and blend them with the other parts was utterly different from the others. I felt his experience performing in an orchestra was different. Hiroki Kasai's viola was like a professional principal. He seemed the calmest of the members. It was like watching the movements and singing of the many viola parts we've experienced this season. Violinist Itamar Zorman's dynamics and lyrical intonations were completely unexpected in chamber music. When I asked if the dynamics were those specified by Mendelssohn, he said there were many fortes written in the sheets. This piece was like experiencing a symphony with a full orchestra. Clara Neubauer's tone was incredible. I caught a glimpse of the maestro's tone, sensing the violin's origins. The ensemble was immersed in every part, and in her own part, she blended with the others while still displaying a unique personality distinct from Itamar's. The most significant difference from the previous members in February was that they all possessed incredible personalities, yet formed a unified world.

At the beginning, someone came out and gave a lengthy promotional speech. I've been to several Marlboro performances, and he repeats the same thing over and over. His voice sounds like he's been recorded over and over again, and he lacks passion. I don't want to hear him speak loudly before a performance. I was preparing to calm down and listen to Britten. A note in the program or flyers handed out downstairs before the concert would be enough promotion. Stop talking before the performance, or let the performers do the talking if they want. This has completely turned me off listening to Britten.

Shostakovich set

To bar MG, Rodrigo, on Friday evening, many young audience members had expected to see the artists in an after-show, but the bar closed, so they left. If the bar allowed a 30-minute after-show, they would come more to Carnegie. Because this intimacy only possible at Weill bar space. Not in outside.
