Julia Fischer and Jan Lisiecki's Spring battle in New York

Kentaro Ogasawara April 4, 2025

Julia Fischer and Jan Lisiecki performed a concert at the renovated David Geffen Hall on April 1st. The program note reveals their previous tour and explains the process for selecting the program. Beethoven was important to them, Julia wrote, and Schumann was Jan's idea, while Mozart was Jan's. Julia described the changing violin-piano pairing from Mozart to Schumann, explaining that in Mozart's sonatas, the piano plays the leading role, while in Beethoven, they are nearly equal, while in Schumann, the violin leads the sonata. The performance was an intimate dialogue between the two solo instruments. Lisiecki said that music truly comes to life only when it is performed, experiencing the purity and simplicity of Mozart, the expansiveness of Beethoven, and the turbulence of Schumann. David Geffen Hall has recently undergone a renovation, resulting in a new acoustic. The stage was surrounded by seats, allowing me to see the audience and clearly hear the voices of nearby listeners, giving the impression of meticulous acoustics. In the first piece, Mozart, I enjoyed the purity and simplicity that Jan spoke of. The piano, written in Salzburg in 1779 after returning from Paris, was rich in elegance and splendor, and the violin intertwined with it. I enjoyed the two musicians' sublime tone, savoring the warm and rich ensemble in the second movement, Cantabile, and Jan's rendering of the light Rondo in the third movement, which was beautifully graceful. The second piece, Beethoven's violin sonata nicknamed "Spring," was played by the two soloists in an evenly matched ensemble, as Julia mentioned. The first movement begins with a violin melody reminiscent of the elegance of the previous Mozart piece, with arpeggios and scales repeated at varying angles. In the subsequent succession of chords, Julia's violin sent resonances in all directions, creating a new acoustic experience that seemed to be enjoyed by the audience. The quiet, relaxed intimacy of the second movement and the off-beat violin of the third movement were intriguing. In the fourth movement, the Rondo, the theme alternates between the violin and piano, with other episodes inserted in between, creating a delightful development of the theme. The two performers clashed with incredible individuality, each one seemingly challenging the other with a recurring theme. The second half featured Schumann's Violin Sonata, where Schumann's passion exploded. The two performers, who were close but not too far apart, suddenly became very distant, then suddenly drew closer and became intimate, creating a thrilling performance. The two encore pieces allowed us to relax and enjoy the pair's masterful performance.
