La Sonnambula / Bellini's Melody

Kentaro Ogasawara September 14, 2025

Bellini is a poet of melody. He places long, flowing lines over a restrained orchestra, expressing emotions and psychology to their utmost depth. La sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) exemplifies this, with its melodies conveying both narrative and the subtleties of feeling.

Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835), born in Sicily, died young at the age of 34. He left behind just over ten operas, establishing himself as a poet of melody devoted to the pursuit of melodic beauty. His works are characterized by an orchestral structure that subtly supports and elevates the voice. Bellini’s melodies emphasize psychological expression, often requiring singers to perform extremely long phrases, pursuing pure melodic beauty. The drama unfolds within the poetry of the melody itself, with the melody serving as the driving force of the story.

His melodies are balanced and imbued with classical beauty, while the harmonies remain transparent and straightforward. By intentionally retaining a certain monotony, he heightens the purity of the melody, giving listeners a sense of the “ethereal” or the “eternal song.” In Bellini’s world, melody itself lies at the very core of art, creating a realm of pure poetic expression.

Come per me sereno

Oggi rinacque il dì!

Come il terren fiorì

Più bello e ameno!

How serenely, just for me,

Today has dawned anew!

How the earth has blossomed,

More lovely, more delightful!

Mai di più lieto aspetto

Natura non brillò;

Amor la colorò

Del mio diletto.

Never with a happier aspect

Has nature ever shone;

Love has tinted it all

For my beloved.

Coro,

Sempre, o felice Amina,

Sempre per te così

Infiori il cielo i dì

Che ti destina...

Always, O happy Amina,

May heaven forever adorn for you

The days with blossoms,

Those days destined for you…

AMINA

I place my hand upon her breast,

You feel it flutter, leap:

It is a heart that has no strength

To sustain its own happiness.

TERESA e CORO

Di tua sorte avventurosa

Teco esulta il cor materno:

Non potea favor superno

Riserbarlo a ugual piacer.

For your fortunate fate

A mother's heart rejoices with you:

Heavenly favor could not

Reserve such equal delight.

ELVINO

Son geloso del zefiro errante

Che ti scherza col crine, col velo;

AMINA

Son, mio bene, del zefiro amante,

Perché ad esso il tuo nome confido;

Amo il sol' perché teco il divido,

Amo il rio, perché l'onda ti dà.

ELVINO

Ah! perdona all'amore il sospetto!

AMINA

Ah! per sempre sgombrarlo dei tu.

ELVINO

Sì, per sempre.

AMINA

E il prometti?

ELVINO

Il prometto.

AMINA

Mai più dubbi?

ELVINO

Mai più dubbi.

AMINA

Timori mai più?

ELVINO

Timori mai più.

AMINA ed ELVINO

Ah!!! Mio bene!

ELVINO

それがあなたの髪やヴェールで遊ぶのを見ると;

AMINA

なぜならそこにあなたの名前を託すから;

ELVINO

AMINA

ELVINO

AMINA

ELVINO

AMINA

ELVINO

AMINA

ELVINO

ELVINO

Forgive me! I am jealous of the wandering zephyr

That plays with your hair, with your veil;

Even of the sun that gazes at you from the sky,

Even of the stream that mirrors you.

AMINA

I am, my love, in love with the zephyr,

Because I entrust your name to it;

I love the sun because I share it with you,

I love the stream because its waves give me you.

ELVINO

Ah! Forgive love for its suspicion!

AMINA

Ah! Drive it away forever.

ELVINO

Yes, forever.

AMINA

Do you promise?

ELVINO

I promise.

AMINA

No more doubts?

ELVINO

No more doubts.

AMINA

No more fears?

ELVINO

No more fears.

AMINA and ELVINO

Ah!!! My beloved!

Ah! non credea mirarti

Sì presto estinto, o fiore;

Passasti al par d'amore,

Che un giorno sol durò.

(Piange sui fiori.)

ELVINO

Io più non reggo.

AMINA

Passasti al par d'amore...

ELVINO

Più non reggo a tanto duolo.

AMINA

Che un giorno sol durò.

Potria novel vigore

Il pianto mio recarti...

Ma ravvivar l'amore

Il pianto mio non può.

Ah non credea, ecc.

ああ!思わなかった、こんなに早く消えてしまうなんて、ああ花よ;

ELVINO

AMINA

ELVINO

AMINA

Ah! I did not think to see you

Extinguished so soon, oh flower;

You passed away like love,

Which lasted only one day.

(Weeps over the flowers.)

ELVINO

I can bear it no longer.

AMINA

You passed away like love…

ELVINO

I cannot endure such grief.

AMINA

Which lasted only one day.

My tears might bring

New strength to you…

But to revive love

My tears cannot.

Ah, I did not think, etc.
