Concert 2024-25

Handel's Organ Concerti by Corti and the BEMF Chamber Ensemble in Boston

Kentaro Ogasawara February 11, 2025

On February 8, Francesco Corti and the Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Ensemble (BEMF Chamber Ensemble) Performed Handel's Organ Concerto at First Lutheran Church in Boston. While listening to Corti’s Handel in New York, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler came up to mind, especially the end of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 performed by Klaus Makela and the Concertgebouw Orchestra last November. I remember that Beethoven was a Handel fan and studied Handel. I also remember that Brahms collected his sheet music and studied it. I thought that most of the 19th-century works featured in orchestral and solo programs at the center of the classical music industry, from Mozart to Mahler, were influenced by Handel. Corti's brilliant performance also made me want to experience more extensive work, such as a concerto, so I went to Boston to see Handel Concerti. The organ pipes were on the air in the balcony and seemed to float. The first piece was Handel’s Harpsichord Suite, which I had heard on Thursday in New York, and after that, Corti ran up to the balcony and played the organ concerti with the orchestra. A pipe sound came to my stomach. The orchestra's period sound appealed to my instincts. I heard a heart-rending passage. Mozart's piano concerti and romantic symphonies, especially Schumann's developmental parts, came to mind. It said Organo ad libitum on the score. It means to do as you like. I don't remember how Corti played, but various thoughts crossed my mind. It was a special that I had never experienced in New York. I was excited at the enthusiastic audience in the hall listening intently. Everyone was enjoying the performance from their hearts. And I felt that we were all friends. It is said that Handel played his organ concerti between the opera acts because the London audience was tired of Italian opera. But everyone at the Lutheran Church in Boston enjoyed Handel, performed Corti and the Boston Early Music Festival EnsembleI. I wonder how many encounters and experiences like this I will have in the rest of my life. Handel's concerti showed me the true faces of those who love music. Of course, people in the 19th century imitated Handel.
