Concert 2024-25

Juilliard Orchestra Conducted by Ruth Reinhardt

Kentaro Ogasawara February 11, 2025

Ruth Reinhardt conducted the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall on Monday night, February 10th, and I experienced an excellent solo by Gaeun Kim in Martinu's Cello Concerto. Every part was well sung with her passion. The ensemble was also superb. There was a small duet between the solo cello, bassoon, and viola, and each performance was outstanding. Ruth gave the soloists enough space to perform in each part of the work, and the principals performed terrific solos. She brought out different tones from the orchestra in the three pieces, creating an excellent flow. In the Brahms Symphony, concertmaster Clara Neubauer's solo was phenomenal. The Juilliard Orchestra sometimes sounds like a movie soundtrack, but her tone and singing style were closer to the Orchestras in Vienna or Berlin. Her timbre was soft, but Brahms' musical energy was concentrated. Unsuk's first piece was a modern take on well-known classical pieces, but it was something that someone with skill could easily play. I thought there was meaning in music that could be created by playing richer tones, listening to each other, and making music with one's power rather than the notes. Whether it was Mozart's overture or Beethoven's Egmont, I think it would be more satisfying and stimulating for the audience to take up new pieces from recent concerts, find the elements they need in the piece at that time, and hone their performance with that approach, even if it is a classical piece. I don't understand the recent trend of taking up new pieces, which isn't very sensible. This performance was fun because I could experience new pieces, famous solo performances of masterpieces, and familiar pieces like Brahms with fresh impressions. It would be even better if it were $20. It used to be free.
