Chasing Form — Timespans 2026

Kentaro Ogasawara August 16, 2026

8.8.2026

Timespans 2026 has begun. For the first concert, I heard a piece that keeps chasing after form.

Wolfgang Rihm

Jagden und Formen, Zustand 2008 (version of 2008)

I am interested in how human beings perceive the world through music. On August 8, at the New York premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Jagden und Formen, Zustand 2008, performed by the Talea Ensemble, Thomas Fichter first explained that Rihm had been working on the piece since the 1990s, and that the 2008 state, performed by the Talea Ensemble, was a work in progress. “Form” is constantly being “hunted,” with new layers continually painted over it. We pursue form to capture it. We chase after a shape, trying to catch it. But the moment we capture it, it moves on to another form. The act of chasing itself generates new forms.

Then, a breathy, almost deflated sound emerged from the double bass, and strange shapes of sound began popping out from everywhere. It was almost like late Kandinsky: forms suddenly appear, each one moving and transforming into another. What happens when form refuses to remain still? The listener’s brain stops predicting and remembering. The score becomes a photograph of mutations in progress. The performers begin the pursuit.

he strings were placed in front, the woodwinds in the middle, and the brass in the back, so it was easy to see who was chasing whom, and how. But halfway through, even that structure seemed to disappear. The violins, for example, sometimes remained silent for quite a long time, but once they began, they continued for a while. At some point, each instrument seemed to reach an extremely intense form of expression. The clarinets were especially remarkable. Besides the bass clarinet, the contrabass clarinet appeared toward the end, and I could hear its range expanding. The English horn sang fiercely, like a bird calling, “Ko-ko-ko-ko-ko-kooo!” In this way, everyone continued playing with extraordinary clarity for fifty minutes within what seemed like chaos.

An overpainting of sound.

What Kiefer and Pollock did with paint, Rihm does with sound. The accumulation of time in which one instrument chases another gives birth to new forms of expression. Even if the performers are chasing what has been notated, if they keep practicing it like gods, eventually they become gods themselves.

And that is who these people are,

Jagden und Formen, Zustand 2008 (version of 2008)

「form(形/形式)」が絶えず「hunted(追い求められ)」、その上から塗り重ねられていく。
